PFAS Reduction

PFAS are persistent, health‑relevant contaminants that need specialized treatment beyond conventional plants. Effective removal combines adsorption (activated carbon), ion exchange and membrane (NF/RO) technologies—often in hybrid trains—tailored to compound type, concentration and regulatory limits.

Treating Persistent PFAS Contaminants

PFAS (per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are persistent and so-called forever chemicals that require targeted treatment beyond conventional water treatment.

Regulations & Site Considerations

Regulatory and operational considerations: PFAS removal strategy depends on which PFAS compounds are present and at what concentrations, regulatory limits (e.g., new EU drinking‑water rules), and site constraints.

Primary treatment options for reduction are:

Activated carbon (GAC or PAC) adsorption: PFAS are captured on the large surface area of activated carbon made from coal, wood or coconut shell. Carbon filters are effective for many PFAS but must be replaced or regenerated when saturated.

Ion exchange: Strong‑base or tailored ion‑exchange resins selectively remove charged PFAS species. Resins are replaced or regenerated when exhausted and can be used in series with other treatments.

Membrane processes (NF/RO): Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis provide high removal of PFAS and other dissolved contaminants; RO gives the highest rejection but produces a PFAS‑rich concentrate that requires further handling.

Combined and hybrid solutions: Best results often come from combined trains — e.g., prefiltration → GAC or ion exchange → NF/RO — to protect membranes and manage waste streams. Treatment of the concentrate/reject stream (e.g., advanced oxidation, adsorption, or thermal/destruction technologies where appropriate) is part of a holistic PFAS management.
