About Bakkafrost

Bakkafrost is one of the leading salmon producers in the North Atlantic, operating across the Faroe Islands and Scotland. With around 100 production sites and approximately 1,700 employees, the company is recognized for its focus on fish welfare, sustainability, and high-quality operations throughout the value chain.

The vessel Bakkafossur is a modern Live Fish Carrier (LFC), designed for the transport and treatment of salmon, including delousing operations at sea.

Our Delivery

A New Water Production System for Bakkafossur

When a Turkish shipyard built the Bakkafossur LFC for Bakkafrost, Enwa was awarded the contract for delivery of a complete freshwater production system with a capacity of 6,000 m³/day, essential for fish handling and treatment on board.

Challenges – Ensuring Stable Production in Harsh Conditions

Once operational, the vessel faced harsher water quality conditions than earlier mentioned in the specification. High algae blooms made continuous water production challenging, requiring robust and flexible water treatment.

Our Solution – Full Water Treatment Line and Close Collaboration

Enwa supplied a full system on time and on budget, including mechanical and screen filters, UF, RO, CEB/CIP, and a common control system with remote access. Through close collaboration with Bakkafrost, the system was fine-tuned to maintain reliable performance even during heavy algae periods.

Boosting Efficiency and Sustainability

The clear advantage of producing freshwater directly onboard is that it can remain in continuous operation, avoiding the need to return to port each time the water tanks require emptying and refilling. This not only improves operational efficiency but also supports both economic and environmental sustainability.

Long-Term Reliability Through Partnership

Throughout the project and system operations, Enwa has worked closely with Bakkafrost to optimize both operations and water production. The result is a highly efficient system and a strong, trust-based partnership that ensures customer satisfaction.

Today, Bakkafossur operates with stable and reliable freshwater production year-round.
